What is SMART-TEX?
SMART-TEX is a special membrane layer, sewn into our garments, that has superior waterproof and windproof properties.
What is meant by a membrane layer or a membrane-lined suit?
It refers to a membrane layer within the suit which has the function of keeping water/wind outside while simultaneously allows the moisture from perspiration to exit as a vapor. This means that no separate rain gear is needed.
Of what use is the membrane-lined suit to the outdoor enthusiast?
With it the outdoorsperson can get by with one clothing outfit, regardless of whether there is rain, sleet, sun, or cold. Simply put: the person stays comfortable and dry, and that is what makes any outdoor excursion pleasant.
Different terms are used to refer to these membranes. Why?
Throughout the world there are but a few manufacturers of these membranes. These manufacturers produce the membrane for several clothing manufacturers under specific brand names that you may know. The membranes are produced to the exact specifications of each clothing manufacturer. SMART-TEX is the tested, special waterproof and windproof membrane that Outhere Smartwear has the exclusive rights to use.
What differences are there between the membranes used in different suits?
The suits may have, depending on the purpose they were designed for, membranes with different degrees of waterproof and breathable qualities. The most challenging, and also the most valuable membrane to make, is one that is as highly waterproof as possible and still superbly breathable.
How could I be convinced that the Outhere SMART-TEX membrane is superior?
The SMART-TEX- membrane has been tested five separate times in two of the most highly respected laboratories in Finland — the Government's Technical Research Center (VTT), and the smart garment laboratory of Tampere Technological University. Each time it has received a highest rating for its water/windproof qualities and its breathability. Further, these suits have been extensively tested in actual outdoor situations in the harsh climes of Finland, Sweden and Norway.

Taloustutkimus Inc. (comparable to the U.S. "Consumer Reports") recently published its report on an extensive hunting suit study, in which consumers gave Outhere spectacular grades for, among other things, its waterproof and breathable qualities. All of the most common membrane-lined suit brand names were included in the study (Taloustutkimus 4/2004)
What were the waterproof test results for the Outhere SMART-TEX membrane-lined suits?
The VTT tested the suits' waterproof quality in its own laboratory. The waterproof quality was tested by gradually increasing the water pressure applied to the SMART-TEX membrane. The test was repeated five times. In each repetition the SMART-TEX membrane achieved the highest reading possible on the VTT apparatus by holding back a water column 10 meters high. That's over 30 feet! (Research Report VTT/pro6/3069/03).

Also, the input that has come in from our customers regarding the waterproof quality of the suits has been extremely positive.
If my suit is waterproof because of the SMART-TEX membrane liner, why does water just bead up and run off of the surface?
Besides the liner, each of our outer pants & jackets is treated with a special coating that sheds water. This special treatment adds one more layer of water protection, but it does not affect the breathability of the garments.
Ok, I understand that it is highly waterproof, but does the SMART-TEX membrane breathe?
ABSOLUTELY!! We understand that it is not enough to provide waterproof garments, but every outdoorsperson needs clothing that breathes. This protects against overheating, and, in cold weather, the chill that accompanies wet skin.
How did you test the breathability of your garments?
Our garments were tested in the Tampere Technological University smart garment laboratory. A perspiring, heated laboratory dummy was used to test the breathability of the SMART-TEX membrane. This dummy simulates a human body's heat production and perspiration. It can be used to measure the thermal insulation quality of garments, as well as how well it is permeated by water vapor (= how breathable it is).
What were the test results?
According to the official test reports of the Tampere Technological University smart garment laboratory, the breathable quality of the Outhere SMART-TEX suit is in the excellent class. The final report states, among other things, that because the waterproof quality of the Outhere SMART-TEX suit is extremely good (supporting a water column of over 10 meters), it is safe to assume that the Outhere SMART-TEX suit will function extremely well, from a clothing physiology viewpoint, in outdoor conditions.
The lab tests are great, but what has the feedback from your customers been like?
Our most critical testers have been our customers. They have tested the performance, durability, water- and windproof properties, features, and the comfort of the Outhere SMART-TEX suit in all possible outdoor situations. In these real-world situations our customers say we pass the test. Many of our customers are so excited by their purchase that they go out of their way to let us know how much they like it. How have the suits themselves been designed?
The design of our suits is done in Finland, based on input from thousands of active outdoorspeople. We've listened to your needs and have done our best to accommodate your wishes. Our objective during the design process was to come up with the best outdoor suits for rugged use in varying conditions. Each Outhere SMART-TEX suit has been designed to function expertly in a wide variety of outdoor situations, and has been extensively tested in the northern climates of Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the United States.

The SMART-TEX Sportsman's Suit has been designed to accommodate many different outdoor situations in many different weather conditions. As the temperature drops, or the activity level decreases, the extra layers provided in the bonus package will keep anyone warm. The many strategically placed pockets were designed to accommodate the gear and gadgets sportspersons need. Even the quiet, rustle-free material was carefully designed.

The SMART-TEX Multi-Sport Suit was designed by active outdoorspeople who know how to work up a sweat — regardless of the weather. The accommodating fit provides freedom of movement, while the many zippered openings provide extra areas of ventilation. When you want to be outside, this suit removes the obstacle of bad weather.

The SMART-TEX Winter Suit was designed for those who live in harsher climes. The supple, lightweight pants and jacket are a treat to wear for any winter activity. This outfit will keep you warm and dry in the coldest temperatures you would dare to be out in. And of course, the outfit is loaded with pockets and zippers for all of your gear.
Do your suits have the so-called taped seams?
Yes they do. All of the seams in the membrane have been secured by SMART-TEX membrane tape, which was designed specifically for that purpose.
How do I pick the right size for me?
Our suits are designed to accommodate many different body types. By telling us your height, weight, and waist size we will find the right suit size for you.
Are sizes available for women and youth?
All of our garments are available in women's and youth sizes, but, at this time, we do not carry small children's sizes.
What if my pants/jacket are too long?
All of our outer pants and jackets come with adjustable ankles, wrists, and waists. Simply tighten the fastening strap and adjust the garment as necessary. This is especially helpful for the pants. To do this, simply pull the pants over the tops of your boots or shoes, tighten the strap above your ankle, and fold any excess length over the strap.
Can I embroider or otherwise alter my garments?
Embroidering or altering garments with the SMART-TEX membrane will puncture the membrane and cause it to leak. Please contact us first to determine what, if any, alterations can be made to your suit.
Are your suits machine washable?
Definitely. The suits hold up perfectly to normal machine washing, but they should not be put in the dryer. Simply hang the garments in a well-ventilated area so that they can adequately air dry.
How can your prices be so low, when comparable outfits are almost twice the price in stores?
First, we produce our clothing in large quantities, which ensures that we keep our production costs low. This savings we pass along to you. When you purchase from us, you really are buying factory-direct — this keeps out all of the middlemen (and added costs) normally associated with retail stores.
